I want to retexture it into a buoy, with some detail on it - so I don't want to just use primitives. Anyone have any ideas?

Or for something else that would work as a Movie-era log buoy?

Is there any canon source on this, or are you making one from scratch?

Well in enterprise they used something that looked like spudnik..small round with antenna's and red blinking lights.
Or you could use a torp just paint it with yellow black markers and list it number wise,as buoy 102 or something.
this help.
the yellow black could be for reactor case for power .

The only log buoy we've seen is the SS Valiant's which was old and out of date even by TOS standards, so not stunningly useful. One of the tech manual type books claims that photon torpedoes can be used for almost anything, and I think it'd work well enough - paint it white, put U.S.S. SURYA NCC-1850 EMERGENCY LOG BUOY on the side and it'll sell the point. It's just a casing, after all, and it is something that needs to be ejected from the ship with some force. I'm not wedded to the notion, though, as long as whatever it is looks movie-ish.

If I just wanted a torpedo I'd use primitives; but I want to put the text on it, and D|S primitives UV mapping is a pain; plus it'd be scaled, so I'd have to distort the texture to compensate.

I have a low poly class 9 probe model I borrowed from Bridge commander that I use.

Once I used a scaled up model of an M203 40mm grenade round to represent a recorder marker, although I can't find that render.

I ultimately found an .lwo that I got to convert successfully. You can see pics of it in the Starship Surya : Resting Place preview thread.
